Musical Hoops

Picture

Type: Foundational Movement

Cycle: 1-2

Tactic: Finding closest target, sharing, knowing colors.

QEP: 1                                                                                          Activity Level: L

Description:

Layer 1:

  • Scatter hoops on the floor, one for each student. They can begin moving when music starts playing, as soon as the music stops, each student must find a hoop for themselves and stand within it. (When music plays use different types of locomotor patterns i.e. bear walk, skipping, running be creative rolling!)
Layer 2:

  • When music stops each student has to do a static position that you invent. (To integrate their ideas, give them a chance to create their own position in their hoop)
Layer 3:

  • You can imitate musical chairs, by taking out one hoop or more. It creates a little more competition for the students because it requires them to try to get to the hoop faster and do the position more quickly. (The students get back into the game after jumping jacks or another move)
Modifications:

--Test their basic knowledge by yelling out colors to stand in. (can be more than one in a hoop in this case)

--You can make teams. Make all students skip around as soon as you yell “colors” all team members must run around to their hoop. Fist team to have everybody’s foot within the hoop wins.

Safety:

Keep head up.

No fighting for a hoop! First one inside the hoop gets it. Learn sportsmanship.
